WORK is underway to rejuvenate a prominent site in north Manchester with the development of new housing.

The North West Development Agency (NWDA) is supporting developers Bellway who will be carrying out the project on the junction of Bankfield Street and Rochdale Road in Harpurhey.

Bellway will build 78 flats on the land which has been vacant since earlier houses and shops on the site were demolished years ago and has been used for illegal tipping.

The new flats on a major route into central Manchester will be offered for sale and aim to encourage young workers to remain in the area which is dominated by rented housing.

Chris Wilkinson, development manager at NWDA, expected the development to bring a boost to the area's economy.

He said: "This scheme will provide quality, competitively priced housing giving the people of north Manchester a wider choice of accommodation options.

"It will encourage people back to live in the area and create an attractive frontage onto Rochdale Road."

The first two-bedroom properties in the development are already available go on sale and construction work will be completed by 2003.
