SWIMMERS and gymnasts are being offered the chance to earn recognised national qualifications that could help them find jobs in their field.

Training for the RISS national pool lifeguard award is being organised by Manchester Leisure sports development unit at Harpurhey Pools on Rochdale Road.

The two-day classes will be held on Thursday and Friday evenings from 6pm to 9pm from March 30 until May 5.

Sessions will be held on March 30 and 31, April 6 and 6, 13 and 14 and will switch from Thursday and Friday to Wednesday and Thursday on April 19 and 20 to allow for Good Friday. Classes will continue on April 27 and 28 and May 4 and 5

Courses cost ?15 for the unwaged or ?60 for others and help is available for transport and childcare costs.

Training is also being provided for gym instructors to obtain the BAWLA leaders award on Saturday and Sunday, May 27 and 28 between 9am and 5pm.

The two day course is for those giving basic instruction in weight training including the use of free weights and exercise machines.

It is suitable for sports centre and fitness club staff as well as youth leaders and coaches and is available to candidates aged 16 and over.
