AROUND 8,000 Manchester City Council tenants who already benefit from low-cost heating and hot water received a further boost when it was agreed to cut charges by 5.5% for 2000/1.

The decision affects tenants whose homes are served by communal heating systems and amounts to yearly savings of between ?10 and ?40 depending on the size of their homes.

Communal heating systems operate by providing heating to several homes from a single boiler and are used in Clifford Lamb Court and Bradford Court in New Moston.

Manchester Housing buys fuel in bulk at contract gas prices to operate communal heating systems and passes on the savings to tenants so domestic fuel bills are reduced.

A proportion of heating charges is reinvested to maintain the systems.

Councillor Derek Shaw, Manchester City Council's executive member on housing, said: "I am delighted that the continued success of communal heating systems, which is an integral part of our affordable warmth strategy to bring cheaper domestic heating to all Manchester tenants, has allowed us to pass on these significant savings to our tenants."
