SAFE routes for cyclists are being introduced to encourage motorists to leave their cars at home in Moston and Lightbowne. Cycle lanes are being introduced along Lightbowne Road with advanced stop lines at junctions three metres in front of the stop lines for general traffic. The stop lines aim to create a safe area to help cyclists turning by improving their visibility and allowing them to jump traffic queues and reduce potential conflict with other vehicles. Over the next few weeks 61 advanced cycle stop lines will be installed at 15 junctions throughout Manchester as part of a scheme put together in consultation with the Manchester Cycle Forum and North Manchester Regeneration. They will be coloured with a high-grip, green road surfacing material and new road signing. Councillor Paul Cruthers, Manchester's lead member for cycling, believes the new markings will make junctions safer for all road users. He said: "This is part of our general plan to increase the proportion of people who cycle around the city-this will make the roads less dangerous for everyone." |
