 WOMEN worried about the impact of booze on their baby can continue to enjoy drinking wine and beer from The Alcohol Free Shop.The unique online shop selling alcohol-free products has been set up with mums-to-be in mind. The Alcohol-Free Shop is run by a Manchester couple offering alternatives for those who avoid alcohol at least some of the time. Christine Humphreys and husband John Risby have opened the online shop at www.alcoholfree.co.uk with a variety of alcohol-free drinks, baby care, toiletries, and health and beauty products. In light of recent advice from the Department of Health that women should avoid alcohol during pregnancy and when trying to conceive, The Alcohol-Free Shop is encouraging women to try alternatives so they can still join in the fun. Christine said: "We at The Alcohol-Free Shop have always promoted abstinence during pregnancy and breastfeeding and now the government are telling women it's best to avoid alcohol at these times. "Alcohol can pass through the placenta into the baby's bloodstream or can be passed on to the baby through breast milk. "As well as protecting babies from harm, alcohol-free drinks have about a third of the calories of their alcoholic equivalent so won't pile on the pounds and will help women wanting to lose weight gained during pregnancy." In addition to selling alcohol-free wine and beer, The Alcohol-Free Shop offers alcohol-free cold and flu remedies and mouth wash which Christine suggests women may also want to consider during pregnancy. She said: "Given the latest advice to avoid alcohol completely, women should be aware that a lot of over the counter cough mixture contains alcohol." The Alcohol-Free Shop website includes informative articles on alcohol and health as well as a wide range of products suitable for mother and baby. Christine added: "Alcohol is contained in many products most people wouldn't normally expect. Even though alcohol is an irritant and can exacerbate skin problems, it is used in skin and hair care products and toiletries including baby products. "During pregnancy, a woman's skin can become particularly sensitive and a baby's skin is so delicate that it's a good idea to avoid using products that contain alcohol." The Alcohol-Free Shop also has a selection of gifts ideal for any occasion, such as Celebration Hampers featuring alcohol-free bubbly, Chocfull Hampers including our luxury handmade truffles, and Pamper Hampers with our relaxing bathcare and beauty range.
