from north Manchester joined competitors from across the region for a day of athletics competition yesterday (Sunday).

The athletics festival held in Wigan brought young people together to find the best of the North West as part of a series of indoor meetings at venues around the UK.

More than 200 teams of under 11s are taking part in the Fun in Athletics contest in track and field events, which runs until March.

A squad from Blackley competed at yesterday?s heat against teams from Bury, East Cheshire, East Lancashire, Horwich, Central Lancashire, Sale and Wigan.

For older children there is a sister scheme called Sports Hall with a more serious competitive element and the North West heat will be staged in March.

Both events are organised by the Sports Hall Athletics Association and are sponsored by the insurance firm CGU and sportswear firm Reebok.
