FAMILIES are being encouraged to take advantage of tax credits for working families which could benefit more than 4,351 parents in north Manchester.

MP Graham Stringer says families will be, on average, ?1,250 a year better off under the Working Families Tax Credit.

Under the scheme workers with a family are guaranteed take-home pay of ?200 a week and will pay no income tax until they earn at least ?235 a week.

Working families will also get help with childcare costs up to ?70 a week for one child and up to ?105 a week for two or more children.

Mr Stringer said: "This is a well-earned boost to the incomes of hard-working families with children. For the first time, work will always pay more than benefits.

"On average the 4,351 families in Blackley will be ?24 a week better off. Some could be over ?1,000 a week better off than a family on credit.

"This will not only improve the living standards of working families themselves but will provide a welcome stimulus for the local economy."
