CHILDREN at a Moston sports club are expecting a visit from convicted rapist Mike Tyson after he pledged ?10,000 to help disadvantaged young sportsmen.

The former world heavyweight champion has promised the donation from his ?5m purse to Collyhurst and Moston Lads' Club, which has produced stars including Nobby Stiles, Pat Barrett and Michael Gomez.

Youngsters have also been told they can expect a visit from Tyson as he prepares for his match at the MEN Arena when he takes on Julius Francis on Saturday, January 29.

Club boss Brian Hughes, who was awarded the MBE in the New Year's Honours list, was among those who supported promoter Frank Warren's battle to bring the ex-convict to Britain.

Crumpsall councillor and Manchester City Council leader Richard Leese last week called on the boxer to donate half his prize money to charities for abused women.

His visit has been criticised by Cllr Leese, despite the cash the bout will bring into the city, in view of the fighter's record.

Cllr Leese said: "Now the fight is going ahead, 50% of Mike Tyson's personal purse should be going to charitable organisations campaigning against violence to women in Manchester."

Lightbowne councillor Bill Risby welcomed the donation, which will keep the boys' club going for five years, but understood the anger felt towards the visit.

He said: "I think we have to separate the sport from the personality. It's like football - there are some footballers on the pitch that aren't perfect. Now Tyson's here, we just have to accept it.

"This fight will be good for Manchester and I know the club and a lot of local youngsters will benefit from this money."
