ROAD safety schemes undertaken in the last decade have been hailed a success after a review showed dozens of lives have been saved in north Manchester.

The review has been undertaken after demands for zero tolerance against speeding following the death of a Crumpsall man after a collision with a car on Crumpsall Lane.

Residents in north Manchester have called for more 20mph zones and road humps to slow traffic and deter 'rat running' which turns some side roads into race tracks at peak times.

Greater Manchester Police road safety officer Brian Ritson has declared 20mph zones impractical to enforce but the review credited the system with huge cuts in accident rates.

Nine areas of the city have been targeted for traffic calming measures during the 1990s including Harpurhey, Cheetham, Crumpsall, Lightbowne.

In Crumpsall there has been a 46% reduction in accidents and in Cheetham Hill's Esmond Road area accidents have gone down by 88% since 20mph limits were imposed.

In the Worsley Avenue, Nigel Road and Lily Lane areas of Lightbowne accidents are down to zero and the Lewis Avenue area of Harpurhey have also seen accidents wiped out. At Bank Road and Wilton Road, Crumpsall, accidents have also been eliminated.

The government has launched a three-year research programme to assess the benefits of pedestrian-friendly 'home zones' where pedestrians take priority over cars.

If the experiment is successful they could be introduced in residential areas across the city.
