MAGIC Basketball are trying to better the success of Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson with their production of youngsters ready to step into the big-time with the Magic first team.

A stunning 122-88 victory by Magic 2 over Northampton in Division 2 of the National League contained some outstanding performances from Haris Charalambous (29 points), Callum Jones (25 points) and James Jones (15 points). Haris is now a regular in the first team and the Jones brothers, whose father, Jeff, is the Magic coach, have both made their debut this season. With a production line like this, the Magic's future looks secure.

Other youngsters ready to step up are Alan Metcalfe (17 years, 6'9"), Marc Diggett (17 years, 6'6") and Andrew Thompson (17 years, 6'8"). All these players have come through the Club's Junior ranks and have been lucky to have been received the top-quality coaching of Graham Williams, Neil Bradley, Peter Hanson and Peter Minister. All these are voluntary coaches who invest much of their time and energy into the young players' future.

Another set of successful National League results from the weekend. The Under 18 boys squeezed past York by 63-57. The Under 16 boys annihilated Rotherham by 167-29, while the Under 16 girls gave their usual gritty performance to defeat Stockport 86-56. In the Under 16 boys game between two of our own teams, Stockport easily handled Trafford to win by 51-32, with outstanding performances from the captain, Greg Michaels (13 points), the England point guard Peter Paraskeva (13 points) and Bradley Connor (12 points). All these players are from the Stockport area and have a great future with the Club.

Any Basketball enthusiasts who see the steel girders being erected on the site of the Whalley Range High School for Girls ( at the junction of Wilbraham Road and Princess Parkway ) will be seeing the beginning of the Club's new Basketball Centre, which is costing ?2million. Expected to open in July 2002, all the Magic promotions will be moved to there, where capacity crowds of 1,000 are expected. 2,500 young players are expected to use the Centre every week for coaching and competitve leagues and it will also be the headquarters of the Club'exciting new Academy.
