Leigh Athletic resumed their leadership of the Premier Division with a 7-0 over luckless Failsworth Town, writes Scott White. Rick Wilson lead the way with a hat-trick, Danny Wilson hit two more with Clark Dobson and Neil Sumner completing the scoring. Wythenshawe Amateurs rise into second spot thanks to a narrow 3-2 win over Pennington, Paul Aldus, Andy Halfpenny and Pat Shaughnessy all netting for the Ammies with Andy Nellis and Carl Caffrey scoring for the visitors. A comprehensive 4-1 victory at Elton Fold takes East Manchester into third, their deadly duo Martyn Stewart and Darren Green hitting a brace each with Paul Owen on target for Fold. Willows snatched a surprise 2-1 win at Atherton Town to deprive their hosts of the leadership, two goals from Colin Hares proving decisive for the visitors, Phil Hornby notching Town's goal. Irlam MS secured a comfortable 3-0 win at near neighbours Monton Amateurs, Matty Williams striking twice with Tony Camilleri adding the third. The key clash of the day took place at Sandgate Road where Prestwich Heys hosted Stockport Georgians, and the visitors lead until late on thanks to a John Duffy free-kick, but Alex Ritchie came off the bench to grab a point for Heys. A 1-0 home win over Dukinfield Town gives Rochdale Sacred Heart breathing space from the relegation spots, and left Town looking over their shoulders, Darren Clancy netting in the first half. First Division leaders Royton Town were shocked as Belden came from 2-0 behind to win 6-2, the Blackley side warming up for Thursday's Manchester Challenge Trophy Semi-Final in style. Jamie McDonald and Craig Lockett hit two goals each with Mark Brown and Jamie Hampson completing the scoring, Paul Ashton and Callum Frizzell were both on target for Royton. Hollinwood assume pole position courtesy of a thumping 6-1 win over Avro, the prolific Rob Ovey hitting five of his team's goals with Lee Marlborough adding the sixth, Gary Smith scoring Avro's consolation effort. A pulsating 3-3 draw saw Whalley Range and Wilmslow Albion take a point each, Mark Brown and Mohammed Baldeh (2) goals for Range balancing efforts from Graham Smith and Dean Martin (2) for Albion. Hindsford were stunned by a fluent Ashton Athletic side who ran out 3-0 winners at Brocstedes Park, Paul Vermiglio setting the Latics on their way before a Ryan Small brace sealed three valuable points. Breightmet recovered from a 3-1 deficit to run out 5-3 victors at Tintwistle Villa, goals from Martin Clarke and Andy Gleeve (2) setting Villa up for the points before United bounced back through Phil Heap (2), Faizal Mohammed, Jimmy Beevers and Damien Harper. A late equaliser from Trevor Jepson deprived Wythenshawe Town of the points from the visit of Whitworth Valley, Rick Poole and Darren Mee giving Town the edge until late on after Mike Barker had kept Valley in the game with a first half goal. Warth Fold took another three points off a close rival as they defeated Manchester Royal 3-2, Danny Morrison scoring twice with Lee Morris also netting, Jonny Chrimes and Danny Hanson bagging Royals' goals. In another vital game for the side down the table, Old Alts overcame Milton 2-1 to edge clear, Adam Owen and Dean Hayes were both on target with Matty Helme keeping the visitors in the hunt. In the Derbyshire Divisional Cup, holders New Mills claimed a Final date thanks to a 4-2 win on penalties against Alfreton Town. In front of a bumper gate, the Millers raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to Mike Brankin and Chris Lees goals, but Alfreton pulled level to take the game into extra-time before the Church Lane side won the shoot-out. Springhead earned a replay with Askern Miners Welfare with a hard fought 1-1 draw, Bob Fulham giving the Lees side the lead. A goal on the stroke of half-time ended Hindsford's Goldline Trophy hopes at the hands of West Lancashire League leaders Charnock Richard in midweek. The prospect of a dream date at the Reebok Stadium was only 90 minutes away, and the Squires Lane side rose to the occasion against a Charnock side who are unbeaten in league and cup so far this season. Under floodlights at the Lancashire FA's County Ground in Leyland, the Tonics gave a good account of themselves after falling behind, but they could not unlock a well marshalled Charnock defence. East Manchester booked their place in the Manchester Challenge Trophy Final courtesy of a 1-0 victory over Mid-Cheshire League side Chorlton Town on Thursday night at the County Ground. A 16th minute strike from the lively Darren Green sealed the win for East in what was a close encounter between two well matched sides. Chances were at a premium for both attacks, East's Martyn Stewart proving the biggest headache for the Chorlton defence with his strength and pace, but the single goal was to prove all that separated the sides. East will play either fellow AIR MILES Manchester Leaguers Belden or Lancashire and Cheshire League side Heaton Mersey in the Final, the second Semi-Final being played next Thursday. |
