HOUSEHOLDS in north Manchester are being encouraged to go green and recycle their real Christmas trees to help needy children.

For every ton of trees recycled at Newton Health household waste and recycling centre on Reliance Street, ?5 will be donated to the Children in Need charity. Trees can be taken for recycling from now until January 20, between 8am and 6pm.

It is estimated that, if all the Christmas trees bought each year in Greater Manchester were stood in line, they would reach from here to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Last year more than 300,000 trees were collected for recycling in the Greater Manchester area. However, a lot more - enough to fill Old Trafford football stadium twice - were thrown away.

People are also being reminded to recycle - or reuse - their Christmas cards. Cards can be taken to civic tips and recycled in special Christmas card recycling containers until the end of February.

Councillor Alan Spinks, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for the Environment, said: "The recycling facilities at the council's civic amenity sites and other venues provide the perfect opportunity for residents to dispose of their Christmas household waste in a convenient and environmentally friendly way.

"It is in everyone's interests to look after the environment and I am sure that the prospect of helping to raise money for Children in Need will give people an extra incentive to recycle their Christmas trees as well as their cards."

Manchester City Council is also urging residents to make use of recycling sites for newspapers, magazines, glass, drinks cans and other items. Details of site locations are available through the recycling hotline on: 0161 234 4629.
