PUPILS at north Manchester schools have had their art work included in a new road safety calendar for 2002. Eight -year-olds Matthew Davies, of St Anne's RC School, Crumpsall. and Rebecca Burton, of St Margaret Mary's RC, New Moston have their work featured in the calendar unveiled by Manchester's lord Mayor John Smith on Friday, December 14. Matthew's work depicts autumn and Rebecca's represents winter in the calendar which is part of the Junior Road Safety Officers scheme, and features posters giving road safety messages based around the four seasons. Laura Hewitt, aged 10, of Ashbury Primary, Beswick, had her work chosen to represent Spring and 10-year-old Rebecca Winstanley, of Christ the King RC, Newton Heath had her poster selected to depict summer. All 74 schools which enrolled in this year's scheme were invited to take part in the poster competition and between them submitted more than 1,500 entries. The calendar will now be distributed across the city to schools, businesses and council offices. The Junior Road Safety Officers scheme involves schools selecting pupils to take responsibility for carrying out road safety initiatives in their schools. Their duties include maintaining a notice board, co-ordinating activities and giving out road safety messages in assemblies. |
