VOLUNTEERS are being recruited to train to work with Asian people recovering from mental health problems in north Manchester.

Awaaz volunteering project was launched in June 1998 to provide advocacy for people unable to speak for themselves. The group is now expanding its work in the area and needs extra help to meet clients' needs.

Volunteers are needed to help male and female Asian clients with supported leisure activities including swimming classes and keep fit sessions.

Workers are also needed to organise drop-in facilities and help publicise Awaaz' services at venues in north Manchester to raise awareness among potential clients in the local Asian community.

All volunteers are given relevant training in their area of interest and attend a range of training courses to develop skills and practical experience that could help in finding jobs.

Some of the training courses on offer include using computers in Urdu and English, counselling, stress and anger management, and health and safety.

All volunteers receive travel and meal expenses as well as regular support and supervision.

For more information about training courses and how to become a volunteer with Awaaz contact Sajda Akhtar on 0161 702 1842 or write to the Awaaz Group at Woodville Resource Centre, Shirley Road, Cheetham Hill.
