There was derby day joy for Atherton Town as they defeated near neighbours Pennington at Howe Bridge, and they had the added bonus of regaining pole position in the Premier Division courtesy of a 3-0 win, writes Scott White. To rub salt in the wounds, it was two Pennington old boys who did the damage as Danny Christie and Clint McLoughlin both netted, the latter with an acrobatic bicycle kick, Andy Morris finishing the scoring. High-flying Elton Fold moved up to third spot in the table with a 5-1 romp over Dukinfield Town, as the Bury side prepare for next week's mouthwatering Lancashire Shield clash at West Lancashire League aces Charnock Richard. Paul Owen was Fold's hero as he racked up a fine hat-trick against a shell-shocked Town, Keith Ingham and John Price adding the extras, Matty Taylor snatching the visitors solitary reply. Wythenshawe Amateurs dramatically propelled themselves back into the title race as they recovered from a 1-0 half-time deficit to Rochdale Sacred Heart to run out 3-2 winners. Anthony Pauls gave Hearts the edge, but strikes from Baz Kabani, Guy Pilling and Neil Higgins gave the Ammies the points despite a second goal for the visitors from Anthony Holt. In the Manchester Challenge Trophy, Irlam Mitchell Shackleton locked horns with in-form East Manchester and it was the visitors who marched into the Semi-Finals with a comprehensive 3-0 win. Martyn Stewart took his tally to thirteen for the season with two strikes, Danny Self adding the third for an impressive East outfit, beaten only once in their last ten outings. Another all AIR MILES League clash saw Belden entertain Wythenshawe Town and the holders maintained their grip on the coveted silverware with a fine 3-1 win. First half strikes from Mark Brown, Craig Lockett and Stuart Duffy set up a great platform for the home side, Kieron Moore scoring a consolation goal for Town after the break. Derbyshire Divisional Cup holders New Mills made the trip to North Wingfield to play The Boot and Shoe for a place in the Semi-Finals. The Millers made no mistake with a 5-1 triumph, Dean Morgan lashed home a hat-trick with Stacey Wild and Steve Littler completing a great away win. The wet weather put paid to the entire First Division programme, as well as the Premier Division clash between Monton Amateurs and Prestwich Heys. Stockport Georgians' Cheshire Amateur Cup date at Barnton, Springhead's clash with Rothwell Town in the West Riding Challenge Cup, plus Willows and Failsworth Town's Manchester Challenge Trophy games will all now be played next Saturday. |
