RAIN failed to put the dampers on the official switch-on of the Christmas lights on Moston Lane as the community greeted the start of the festive season.

Hundreds of spectators including parents and children joined in the event which included entertainment from the cast of the pantomime by the Moston Amateur Dramatic Group (M.A.D.} of MANCAT at the Simpson Memorial Hall.

To the sound of music and a count down the tree was lit accompanied by a fireworks display in the presence of Lord Mayor Councillor John Smith and Lady Mayoress Mrs Sheila Smith.

The event was also attended by all three Moston councillors Ken Franklin, Paul Murphy and Bill Risby.

After the switch-on all were invited to join in a 'Moston Churches Together' Carol Service in St Dunstan's R.C. Church which included Most Holy Trinity CofE, Moston Methodists, and St John Evangelist CofE.

The Chaplain from North Manchester General Hospital also took part in the service which was led by a choir made up of representatives from each denomination.

The church was crowded with an enthusiastic congregation of all ages for the service which included readings by Julie Connor, Chief Executive of North Manchester Regeneration and the Supt David Thompson of the Greater Manchester Police. An inspiring address was made by Rev Janet Aspey of Moston Methodist Church.

The service culminated in a joint blessing from all the assembled priests.
