MANCHESTER residents are invited to attend a meeting which will include an examination of the current admissions system at the city's high schools.

The meeting of Manchester City Council's Children and Young People's (CYP) Scrutiny Committee, will take place at Cross Street Chapel in the city centre on October 9, from 10am to 1pm.

One of the items under consideration will be the change in high school intake procedures introduced last year in line with new Government guidelines. Under the previous Manchester system, high school places were allocated to pupils attending feeder primary schools. Now there are different criteria, the most significant being the distance families live from the high school of their choice.

At the meeting there will be a presentation by David Johnston, Manchester City Council's Chief Education Officer. Councillor Bernard Stone, Executive Member for Education will also be present. Any parent wishing to listen to or contribute to discussions will be welcome to attend. The Committee will then draw up recommendations to be presented to the Executive Committee.

Councillor David Sandiford, Chair of the CYP Scrutiny Committee, said: "This is an opportunity for parents and all other stakeholders in the educational system to have their say on this important issue. Anyone wishing to make representations to the Committee regarding the new admissions system and ways in which it might be improved will be most welcome to do so.

"We shall be looking at the availability of high school places in Manchester and considering the changes that need to be made to ensure the system works well in the future. We shall also consider the way in which information is provided to parents so that they can make informed choices."

Anyone wanting more information about the meeting may contact Councillor Sandiford on: 0161 234 3705 or 0161 434 1343 or Committee Officer Roger Fielding on: 0161 234 3071.
