FIVE thousand leaflets are going to households in Harpurhey and Lightbowne inviting residents to say hello to their new neighbourhood wardens. The wardens will begin patrols in their red and grey uniforms on August 28 after completing training. Wardens are ordinary people employed to be the eyes and ears of residents. They will be accountable to an elected steering group, including local residents, ward councillors, the police, and the main housing providers in the area. They will hand out leaflets and introduce themselves to residents as they patrol during the day and evening, covering 5,000 properties. Their patrol area will cover estates in Harpurhey from Rochdale Road to Kenyon Lane and in Lightbowne from Kenyon Lane to Halliford Road. Councillor Basil Curley, Executive Member for Housing on Manchester City Council, says: "All of us see things in our neighbourhoods from time to time that make us think, 'Someone should do something about that.' it could be a broken street light, damaged pavement or dumped rubbish. Neighbourhood wardens are trained and ready to be that 'someone'." New warden Paul Minshaw said: "I hope it brings something positive into the area. We have to integrate into the community and get to know people and make a difference in community spirit." |
