YOUNGSTERS in Charlestown have taken part in the final of a competition staged to develop young people's interest in their local parks.

Children at Charlestown Primary School joined three other Manchester schools in the citywide Nature Hunt competition covering four parks including Boggart Hole Clough in Blackley.

Each Nature Hunt was carried out under the supervision of park wardens with participating pupils collecting clues and completing tasks at different locations.

The competition, won by Crowcroft Park Junior School, Longsight, was devised to encourage children to work with wardens, appreciate the value of their parks and discourage vandalism.

Councillor Glynn Evans, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for Culture & Leisure, said: "The response to the competition has been extremely encouraging and, most importantly, everyone who has taken part has had a great time whilst learning about their local parks.

"These parks are a resource for the whole community and this is the ideal way to introduce our younger citizens to them."
