CANAL restoration campaigner David McCarthy has been honoured by the Queen for his 30-years work in bringing disused waterways back into use for business and leisure. David, aged 77, has been operating the Waterway Recovery Group from his Crumpsall home for three decades to raise money to clear and restore redundant canals across the region. The retired bank clerk, who lives at Woodstock on Crumpsall Lane, organises monthly kerbside wastepaper collections to raise cash for the group's work through recycling. He has received the MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours which he accepted on behalf of the whole of the canal restoration movement and especially his local supporters. A band of regular volunteers travels from north Manchester to work on canals each weekend. Members are currently working on the Montgomery canal in Shropshire. |
