An eyesore wasteland has been turned into an oasis of calm behind homes in a New Moston street after the community received a ?10,000 grant. Residents in the North-Atherly area of New Moston are now enjoying a safer and more attractive environment for all the community after the land on Northfield Road was landscaped, gated and transformed into communal gardens. Dena Murphy, resident and North-Atherly Garden Project co-ordinator, was delighted by the impact the new gardens have had on morale among residents. She said: "The project has had a marvellous affect on residents and the surrounding community. It has given people hope and all the hard work has been worthwhile. Everyone now knows their neighbours and we are once more a community." All the residents joined forces to make the project a success by regenerating a derelict area and making it secure from vandals and fly-tippers using the CAS:H2 grant provided through Manchester City Council's Clean and Safe programme, CAS:H grants are available to any community groups who have ideas for improving their local environment and reducing crime. More details and an application form for CAS:H grants can be obtained by calling David Hilton on 234 3199 or Cate Allison on 234 3136. |
