![]() Cllr Martin Pagel Council officers will be on the lookout for anyone who drops litter rather than putting it in a bin. Offenders will be given the opportunity to clear up their mess or face an on-the-spot fine of ?25. The get-tough policy aims to encourage people to be more responsible and think about the effect rubbish on the streets has on the appearance of the city. Councillor Martin Pagel, Deputy Leader of Manchester City Council, explained that litter is one of the most common complaints raised by residents and the authority is determined to crack down on culprits. He said: "The Council has powers to impose fines for dropping litter and we are prepared to use them where necessary. "We cannot allow the thoughtless, irresponsible behaviour of a few, to spoil the environment for the rest of the city's population. There is absolutely no excuse for anyone to drop rubbish in the streets. "We all have a stake in this city and we all have a responsibility to keep the streets clean. We are committed to making Manchester a clean and vibrant place." |
