ATHERTON TOWN step into second spot in the Premier Division thanks to a 2-0 derby victory over Pennington, writes Scott White. Neil Lewis and Phil Hornby were both on target as the Howe Bridge side close vital ground on leaders Wythenshawe Amateurs. East Manchester found Springhead a tough nut to crack as they dropped two points in a 1-1 draw, Robbie Radcliffe opening the scoring for East before Ryan Bailey levelled for 'Head. Stand Athletic edge ominously closer with a 1-0 win following a tight game at Failsworth Town, Steve Stott netting the key goal for the reigning Champions. Sacred Heart went on a second half goalfest against visiting Stockport Georgians where they won 6-0. Andy Taylor netted a hat-trick for Heart with Anthony Pauls adding two and Steve Holt completing the scoring. Prestwich Heys grabbed a good away win at Dukinfield Town where they won 4-2 courtesy of an own goal, a brace from Alex Ritchie and a Brandon Jolly effort. Andy Kenworthy had put Town ahead direct from a corner early on with Gary Marsden heading home their second. Willows and Elton Fold had to settle for a point apiece following a 2-2 draw at Salteye Park. Hardy perennials Alan Haughton and Mark Platt scored for Willows with Steve Smith and Owen Coyle getting Fold's goals. Leigh Athletic stay top of the First Division thanks to a hard fought 2-1 win at Milton. Craig Little opened the scoring for Leigh but Carl Smith drew the home side level before Jonathan Knowles snatched the points for the visitors. Breightmet United move into second spot thanks to a 13-0 demolition of Old Alts. Phil Hinks got the lion's share with a four goal tally, Paul Fletcher got a hat-trick, John Crossland a brace with Paul Smith, Paul Gallagher, James Beevers and Damien Harper getting one each. New Mills swept aside fellow promotion hopefuls Whitworth Valley 4-0 at Church Lane where Mike Brown helped himself to a hat-trick with Steve Done adding the fourth. Hindsford's home clash with Belden was abandoned with six minutes left with the home side leading 2-0 thanks to goals from Danny Toone and Craig Briggs. Wythenshawe Town defeated Manchester Royal 4-0, Darren Mee scoring twice with Graham Makin and Mark Bowcock adding the others as the Ericstan Park side won comfortably. Wilmslow Albion staged a second half recovery at Whalley Range where they were losing 1-0 through a Malc Williams goal. Goals from Albion's James Marsden and Mickey Bierne (2) saw the game turn on its head after the break with Wilmslow getting the points. Avro and Ashton Athletic could not be separated at Broadway where the game ended 2-2. Paul Jump and Martin Moran scored for Avro with Andy Moseley getting both the Latics' goals. |
