AN AWARD for recognising the value of volunteers has been granted to the Team Manchester cycling club by the British Cycling Federation.

The team, which attracts members from across the north west and beyond, will receive a certificate and ?500 towards the cost of training volunteers involved with the club.

This award comes on top of a commendation from Sport England under its Volunteer Investment Programme (VIP) rewarding the club for its policies and practice with a certificate and ?100 prize money.

The Sport England award was won in competition with hundreds of others from clubs in the north west and was the only one to go to a cycling club.

Team Manchester official Gina Upex explained how the awards scheme had helped members focus on the importance of volunteers in the sport.

She said: "It has made members sit up and think how it's just expected that volunteers will turn up every week and run sessions and it doesn't matter that they have jobs to do and families.

"Volunteers are very important to us and they need rewarding. It's nice to be recognised for the work put in."
