![]() (L-R) Paddy Murphy, Michael Kierams, Hughie Barratt, Lord Mayor of Manchester, Vincent Helihy (Irish Embassy), Tony LLoyd MP CLOSER links between Manchester and the Emerald Isle may be forged after the city's Irish Festival organisers met with a representative of the Association of Irish Festival Events, Paddy Murphy. The association co-ordinates festivals in the island's 32 counties and has been considering proposals which could make Manchester the first city outside the island to become a member. Paddy, a founder member of the association, was impressed by the festival organisation and the warmth of Manchester people towards the Irish community. Irish festivals or parades are held in London, Birmingham, Liverpool and other UK cities as well as Manchester alongside the world-famous New York parade. Until now, none has been invited to hold discussions on creating a link beyond the shores of the Emerald Isle. The Association of Irish Festival Events includes activities celebrating Irish culture on both sides of the border in the spirit of Manchester's Irish Festival which aims to involve all communities. |
