A late goal from Alex Ritchie completed a spectacular comeback from Prestwich Heys as they bounced back to beat Willows 3-2 in the Gilgryst Cup. The Salford side had led 2-0 through Carl Molyneaux and Anthony Snelgrove, but Ritchie and Brandon Jolly levelled it up before Heys' late strike. Wythenshawe Amateurs await Heys in the Semi-Final after a convincing 4-0 victory over Pennington. Baz Kabani grabbed two goals with Kenny Goreham and Ray Beer adding the others. In the Premier Division, East Manchester were impressive 2-0 winners at Sacred Heart and go second. Andy Wilkinson got the ball rolling in the first half, and Martyn Stewart sealed the points after the break. Atherton Town and Mitchell Shackleton met at Howe Bridge and it proved a predictably close affair as the game ended 0-0. Stand Athletic were in fantastic form as they despatched Stockport Georgians 7-0 at Ewood Bridge. Mark Wilson led the scoring with a hat-trick, with Paul Telfer, Mark Denham (2) and Paul Leonard all finding the net. Goals from Steve Hill and Mark Crossland gave Dukinfield Town a morale-boosting 2-0 win over Springhead, a result which lifts Town over Willows into eighth place. Failsworth Town also recorded a much needed win as a Paul Robinson strike proved enough for all three points at Elton Fold. In the Murray Shield, Hindsford move into the last four with a 1-0 win at Ashton Athletic, a solitary goal from Matt Toone securing their progress. Wythenshawe Town held off a gutsy comeback from Whalley Range to go through to the Second Round. Mark Bowcock scored twice with Mike Botham getting Town's third, but Jason Connor and Jason Hancock brought Range close before the end. Whitworth Valley leapfrogged over Leigh Athletic into pole position in the First Division with a thumping 4-0 win over Tintwistle Villa, Rory McDowell, Scott Pilling, Paul Adams and Andy O'Loughlin all netting for Valley. Leigh Athletic were surprisingly held to a goal-less draw by Old Alts at Crossford Bridge, Alts showing signs of turning the corner with this excellent point. New Mills keep in touch with a 2-0 win at Avro, the lively Mike Brown snatching both the Millers' goals. Wilmslow Albion were also worthy winners as they returned from Milton with a 3-1 win, Dave Howells, Mark Foster and Keith Malone were Albion's heroes, Trevor Jepson on target for the Rochdale side. Belden, who collected the Manchester Challenge Trophy in midweek with a fantastic 4-2 win over Chorlton Town, once again took the honours as a Mark Brown goal dented Breightmet United's promotion hopes as the Blackley side won 1-0. Hollinwood cleared the cobwebs with a thumping 5-0 win over Manchester Royal, Wayne Needham scoring twice with Lee Marlborough, Mark Hill and Scott Ashton also joining in with a goal apiece. There was less good news in the Manchester Amateur Cup as holders East Manchester were ko'd 4-3 by Trafford Reserves after extra-time, and Willows Reserves also bowed out as they were beaten 4-0 at Abbey Hey. |
