A SNAPSHOT of the shifting cultural landscape of Cheetham is on display in an exhibition recording the changes of the last 100 years at Manchester's Jewish Museum. The exhibition includes photographs and artefacts from the various communities that have made Cheetham home in the last 200 years and contributed to the social melting pot. At Christmas 1999, Cheetham was the focus of a television documentary on the diversity of the communities within Cheetham Hill's square mile including Jews, various Christian denominations, Muslims, Hindus, Sihks and Bhuddists. The exhibition at the Jewish Museum shows how 19th Century Jewish and Irish settlers colonised the area bringing with them their own language, culture, tradition and skills. It follows the influx of refugees from the two world wars including Poles and Ukranians and the growth in the African, Caribbean and Asian populations since the 1950s. Exhibits at the museum, housed in a former Portugese synagogue on Cheetham Hill Road, include photographs, clothing, and symbols of religious observance and examples of art. |
