MOSTON Lane will be the venue for the city's most unusual Christmas lights switch-on on Saturday, December 9.

The event begins at 3pm with Xmascarol.com - a street drama and dance version of Charles Dickens' Christmas Carol which will move along Moston's high street with the audience following the actors by torchlight.

More than 100 people will take part in the street theatre which will lead up to the switch-on on Moston Land and the 25ft Christmas tree outside St Dunstan's church.

Huge trucks along the shopping street will act as stages for each part of the story of Moston's very own Scrooge known as Webster.

As the performance draws to a close, local children from the North Manchester Schools Forum will perform some Christmas songs.

This will be followed by a performance by St Dunstan's Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.

Moston Lane will be switched on by local lad Bobby Power, just back from film success in The Life of Times of Jimmy Grimble starring megastar Robert Carlyle.

Along the lane local children will also use arts and crafts to adopt a shop and transform shop windows into displays illustrating the themes of Christmas Past, Present and Future or the Sprit of Christmas.

Admission to the whole event is free with mince pies and refreshments provided by local bakeries and traders.

Organiser Richard Grossick, said: "Christmas on Moston Lane has become the focus of a huge display of the unique quality of community arts, drama and music activity taking place in north Manchester.

"The promenade performance will enthral and delight visually and musically and bring Christmas to local residents and businesses in a truly memorable experience."
