HOUSING developers in Blackley have earned a prestigious award recognising the quality and diversity of construction in Manchester.

Persimmon Homes, who created a development off Victoria Avenue, have been selected for the Built in Quality Awards sponsored by Manchester City Council's building control service.

The developers are among 12 to receive commendations for their outstanding construction projects selected from more than 2,000 inspected by the building control service in the last year.

The awards are unique to Manchester in recognising excellence across the range of building projects from major commercial developments to the construction of new homes.

Cllr Sue Murphy, of Manchester's Combined Management Board, who presented the awards said: "It is a real privilege to announce the winners of the Built in Quality Awards.

"These awards are synonymous with the very best in building and construction in Manchester.

"The vital contribution of builders and construction companies is often overlooked when accolades are given out. I hope that these awards will inspire all those working in the city who now have to better the standards set by this year's winners."

The Built in Quality Awards winners have been selected by a panel which assessed the work carried on a range of criteria including site safety, fault rectification and access for people with disabilities.

Manchester City Council's building control service inspects buildings to ensure they meet minimum health and safety standards, that energy conservation is maximised and that facilities for disabled people are provided.

The service has more than 150 years of experience and local knowledge in building control matters and employs highly qualified staff to respond to the demands of all types of building projects.
