DOG owners in Crumpsall are being warned they will face fines if they allow their animals to foul or roam the streets.

A survey of the area by environmental health officers has found the area suffers from 'a considerable amount' of dog fouling and a number of dogs are roaming the streets.

Dog owners are now being reminded that it is their duty to clean up after their dog and that it is an offence for any dog owner not to clean up after their pet.

Mike Ankers of Manchester's environmental health department warns it is no defence to claim ignorance of the dog's actions.

He said: "Much of the fouling is on footpaths and in alleyways which, at best, can get on shoes and clothes and at worst can lead to an infection called Toxocariasis.

"We will, over the next few weeks, be attempting to improve the cleanliness of the area by encouraging responsible dog ownership."

Dog owners are being told to encourage dogs to toilet in their own garden or backyard and then either bury the mess or put it in a plastic bag and dispose of it in the bin.

People walking dogs are reminded to always carry a poop scoop or a plastic bag to clear up any mess and to take the pool scoop or plastic bag home and dispose of it there.

Owners are told never let their animal out alone. Any dog picked up by a warden will be taken to Manchester Dogs Home where owners will have to pay a fine plus any kennelling fees before being allowed to collect their dog.

Poop scoops can be obtained free by telephoning the environmental health division tel 234 4929.

Mike Ankers added: "Please be a responsible dog owner and help us to keep your area clean and safe."
