COMPLAINTS over plans for a chimney to expel chemical fumes from a paint booth at MANCAT college in Moston have resulted in the proposals being scaled down.

Planning permission was sought for a 4m steel galvanised chimney on the roof of a single-storey portion of the college on Ashley Lane backing on to properties on Whitman Street.

One resident has objected because of the visual impact and the discharge of chemicals into the local environment and the impact on the value of properties in the area.

The college was asked to find an alternative location but this was not possible due to the internal layout of the college buildings and classes that take place. As a compromise, the college has now reduced the height to 1.5m.

A spokesman said: "The chimney is required to emit fumes from the paint booth. It may also emit a degree of noise. In view of the relationship of this part of the college to residential properties, it is clearly important that any emissions are kept to within acceptable limits."

A decision on the plan will be made by Manchester City Council's planning committee at Manchester Town Hall on Thursday, October 26.
