PRIORITIES including improved lighting, drainage, fencing and new play equipment have been drawn up to revive a neglected Crumpsall park.

The first meeting of the Friends of Herristone Park agreed lack of lighting was a key problem in combating vandalism, under-age drinking and drug abuse in the area.

Residents and park users pointed out that it was impossible to report crimes being committed in the park if the culprits could not be seen and most people were reluctant to visit after dark.

They were also concerned about flooding which they say often turns the park into a mudbath and were angry that damaged fencing and gates had not been repaired leaving the park open to misuse by bikers and tippers.

Users questioned why play equipment including a slide and climbing frame had been removed and agreed that more equipment for children would encourage increased use by families.

Manchester City Council parks officer Phil Henstock pointed out that three litterbins had been installed in the park since a public meeting and hoped for further improvements within weeks.

He said: "We've only had one meeting and we've already got the litter bins. I've also asked for the equipment to be painted and repairs to be done to the fencing and gates which will hopefully be done soon."

Phil promised to investigate the cause of the flooding and the possibility of improving the play equipment but users were told not to expect lighting in the immediate future.

Crumpsall councillor Tom Lister, the group's acting chair, said: "There is a lighting improvement programme going on across the city but it's going to be a while before it reaches Herristone Road.

"Lighting's an expensive item. It's something we should be looking at but it could take two to three years before we get that. In the meantime, we can make smaller improvements. Forming this group is the first step."

The group agreed to be called the Friends of Herristone Park and that the group would be open to anyone with an interest in the park and would meet monthly.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, November 7 at 7pm in Crumpsall Labour Club, Wilton Road when the group will agree a constitution and elect a committee.
