TEACHERS are being encouraged to help produce Wimbledon hopefuls of the future through a new tennis development programme in north Manchester. A successful programme has been running during the summer in the north of the city to create new opportunities for children to play tennis. Pupils from 10 primary schools in and around the Moston area have received short tennis training sessions from the Lawn Tennis Association's development coach Alex Jerman. The scheme is funded by Manchester Tennis Development Group and Lancashire Lawn Tennis Association to increase participation in the sport. More than 300 children will have played tennis sessions this summer - many for the first time - at North Manchester Community Sports Centre in North Manchester High School for Boys on Charlestown Road. During September more sessions will take place and two teachers from each school involved will be able to attend free Nestle Tennis for Teachers courses. Later this month the North Manchester Primary School Short Tennis Tournament will be held. |
