GERED growers are celebrating restoring their vandalised greenhouse a year after it was destroyed when fire almost wrecked their annual show.

Crumpsall and Cheetham Horticultural Society members were devastated when the greenhouse where they had nurtured their vegetables and blooms throughout the spring was gutted by arsonists in 1999.

Prized produce was lost and the award-winning allotments suffered extensive damage only weeks before the biggest event of the season.

Society members pulled together to make sure last year's show went ahead and this year they put on their best display ever after building a new greenhouse bigger and better than before.

Club treasurer Harry Teale said: "It was a big blow but we were insured and we were grateful to receive a ?500 donation from Zeneca for a new greenhouse. The replacement is better than the one we had before."
