A GUNMAN who opened fire on unarmed police in a Cheetham street has a ?10,000 price on his head after a reward was put up for his arrest. Police are treating the incident as attempted murder after the two officers, PC Mark Bramwell, aged 31, and PC Jason Bell, aged 28 were shot at after they stopped a speeding Toyota Corolla in Brideoak Street. Bullets fired from a pistol as the driver and a front-seat passenger ran from the scene narrowly missed the two officers but one struck the car that still had three passengers inside. The shots were fired in the residential street as guests celebrating a wedding were leaving a nearby mosque. Police arrested the three passengers who were later released on bail but are still hunting two Asian men in their 20s. The incident has caused alarm in the neighbourhood where Cheetham councillor Afzal Khan says violence is becoming a regular feature and families fear for their safety. He said: ?It is becoming more violent in Cheetham Hill and I?m very concerned that innocent people will be hurt. There are rival gangs here and ordinary people have to be protected.? |
