SUMMER 2000 is the season of sport with a packed programme of activities in a range of disciplines for children and young people across north Manchester.

From Monday, July 24 to Friday, September 1, sports centres, parks and youth clubs will be hosting sessions aimed to produce the next David Beckham, Nicky Weaver, Denise Lewis and Michael Jordan.

Football competitions and coaching, basketball, canoeing, dance, aerobics and outdoor activities to drag kids from their computers into the parks and onto the sports pitches will be available.

There will also be a chance to try watersports and cricket when pools will offer swimming lessons, water fun days and water polo matches and cricket clubs will run sessions for all ages.

Table tennis, trampolining, tennis, golf, athletics and gymnastics coaching will be on offer at some venues and open-air activities will run throughout the school holidays in parks.

Some venues will provide rounders, orienteering, bowling and roller sports. Qualified sports coaches will also train youngsters in hockey, netball and there will be activities for those as young as six years old at selected sites.
