A BLOOMING good idea aims to brighten streets in north Manchester next spring with the launch of a hanging basket adoption scheme. Streets in Moston and Lightbowne have already been identified for the project involving groups of householders adopting a hanging basket on a lamppost outside their homes. Baskets will be provided by Britain in Bloom and fixed to existing posts. Residents will be asked to set up a rota to water the baskets and help them bloom throughout the summer. It is hoped that in future years green-fingered growers in communities adopting the baskets will nurture their own plants and cuttings to ensure a colourful display year after year. ![]() Cllr Murphy He said: "It's just a small thing but, if we can get two or three households living close to each lamppost to share the responsibility, there would be no maintenance costs. "The baskets would have to be high up enough to avoid vandalism so we could get a grant for watering equipment that could be shared by everyone in the street. "There are always people who enjoy nurturing their own plants and they could get together to provide the flowers for the baskets in future years. "If we can get neighbours working together at this level, we can build on that. People will say it's not worth it because they'll only be vandalised - but it is worth it. "Communities mustn't give up dreaming and working for a better future just because of the few who spoil it for the rest." |
