SATURDAY soccer at Abraham Moss Sports Centre continues to produce promising players among the u13s and u11s who put their skills to the test at the Queen's Park festival. Teams from all over north Manchester battled it out in the latest of the one-day tournaments organised by Manchester Sports Development at community festivals across the city. The tournaments are aimed at promoting football among boys and girls and encouraging children off the streets and into organised teams with qualified coaching. They are run alongside regular training sessions in public parks and at sports centres throughout Manchester to give young people a chance to develop their soccer skills. Abbas Basharat, of Cheetham Hill, whose team thrashed their opponents at Queen's Park 6-0, has benefited from the Saturday morning session at Abraham Moss for the last five weeks. He said: "It's good training. I play football at school, but it's better at Abraham Moss because you get better skills. We get to win medals and go to tournaments as well." The 11-year-old Prestwich High School pupil was eagerly awaiting his chance to represent his country at a Youth International Tournament at Hough End in south Manchester next month. ![]() Zaim Ali, Abdullahi Shire and Abbas Basharat after their victory Abbas and team mates Abdullahi Shire, aged 12, of Moss Side, and Zaim Ali, aged 11, of Crumpsall, will be playing for England against youth teams from all over the world between August 10 and 13. "It's one of the biggest international youth events and all the best youngsters come and play." |
