MICHAEL GOMEZ successfully defended his British super-featherweight and WBO Intercontinental titles after beating Carl Greaves in just the second round, last night in Widnes. The 23-year-old north Manchester-based fighter, who was born in the back of a car, is continuing his march towards a world title attempt, spurred on by Frank Warren's comments that if he wins this fight he'd better have his suitcase packed for a trip to the US. Gomez, who trains under Brian Hughes at the Moston and Collyhurst Boxing Club, came out wearing his signature Sombrero and a top with the legend "True Blue" emblazed on it. His fortunes seem, at the moment at least, to be mirroring that of his chosen team and who can say who will continue the furthest in these two unlikely tales. Mansfield-based Greaves, 24, has height and reach advantage over Gomez, and had been sparring with middleweights to improve his strength, but in the end it was a short and sweet victory for the "Irish Mexican". The first round started slowly with Gomez showing a maturity to his fighting, no longer rushing to conclude the fight early at risk of opening himself up. The lack of action was made up for with a success rate twice that of Greaves. Picking up pace in the second round Gomez appeared to have tired of holding back, showed the confidence that he has become known for, and started throwing more punches. The end came quickly as Greaves was caught on the temple with a left hook, hit the canvas and failed to beat the count. Credit must go to Gomez for waiting to check on the condition of his opponent, who looked dazed and confused, before celebrating. A once-over by his corner staff and doctor gave him the all-clear and the fight was awarded. Gomez, who plans to buy his own house with the proceeds from the defence, said he never doubted he would hold onto his title. "I was a bit over confident. No disrespect to Greaves, he's a good fighter, I have all respect for anyone who gets in to the ring", said Gomez after the fight. "I've got to step up now to European level. I've got new dreams now, I've got to look after my kids, I've not stopped yet, I've only just started." |
