WASTELAND used as an illegal tip and a cover for 'anti-social behaviour' is to be turned into a community garden and children's play area. The Neesa Well Women's Project in Cheetham is opening the garden which will include fencing, paving, seating and soft landscaping on land between Esmond Road and Shirley Road. The site behind two rows of terraced houses that front onto Birkdale Street, Esmond Road and Shirley Road reached through four alleyways that also serve the rear of the terraced houses and garages. The garden would be used and maintained by surrounding residents and will involve gating two alleyways. Greater Manchester Police applaud the proposals as an excellent use of an otherwise vacant piece of land and wholeheartedly support the proposal. Councillors in the area also support the scheme which they say will remove an area of flytipped land that is overgrown and unkempt. They say closing the alleyways will help secure the area, deter 'inappropriate' activities and assist in bringing the community together. |
