THIS weekend marked the first anniversary of north Manchester's community website. The site was launched in July 1999 as crumpsall.net in response to a BBC Panorama programme depicting the area as a community 'on the edge'. Coverage quickly extended to Cheetham and weeks later we added lightbowne.net to the service to include the Moston and Lightbowne areas. At the start of this year the site evolved into northmachester.net covering the seven wards of the whole parliamentary constituency including Blackley, Charlestown and Harpurhey. The site is operated independently and produced without outside funding. We have gratefully welcomed sponsorship in the form of advertising from a small number of local businesses and other organisations to help towards the cost of phone bills and equipment. Our stories over the last 12 months have covered housing issues, education, health and crime as well as community activities and events, and the site has been commended by the government's e-envoy. The following links are a selection of the stories published this year on northmanchester.net. e-envoy praises northmanchester.net Refugee treatment condemned as 'demeaning' Witnesses urged to help murder hunt Teamwork to tackle youth crime Wastepaper keeps volunteers in the swim Surplus homes to be demolished New homes to make Harpurhey hip Sports scheme for former chemical site Hospital bosses lose patience over violence High infant tooth decay rate down to dental charges Church to raise roof with soul music
