SUMMER celebrations launched to restore community confidence after a murder in Crumpsall five years ago could end unless more support can be found to keep going next year. The fifth Crumpsall Carnival is due to take place on Sunday, July 2 when the event is expected to be the biggest yet with a parade starting at Herristone Park at 12 noon. A procession will travel to Crumpsall Park where the shocking murder happened prompting the community to pull together to form the Friends of Crumpsall Park and Crumpsall Action Group. Now organisers fear the hard work done to restore community spirit will fizzle out because key players are being forced to give up due to work commitments elsewhere. Tom Sogebetun, of the community action group executive, appealed for help for this year's event and hoped more people would come forward to keep it alive in future years. He said: "We've been trying to get more people involved over the years but it always ends up being the same handful of people. "The group chair has recently had a baby and is due to move to a new job in Yorkshire and I've just taken on a new job which will mean I'll have less free time. "Joanne Green, who was one of the friends founders, is now a councillor for another area so she has a lot of other duties to fulfil. "We relied a lot on the goodwill of the Crumpsall Park manager Graham Whitehead but he's been so successful he's been promoted to another part of the city, so we've lost him too." The organisers are appealing for volunteers to act as stewards on the day. Anyone able to help should contact Tom on 07957 205008. Stalls are available to community groups for ?5 and for businesses at ?10. |
