The Crumpsall-based Waterway Recovery Group is a branch of a national organisation promoting and supporting voluntary work on rivers and canals across the country.

No special skills are needed except enthusiasm but training is available where needed and the group provides transport, food and sleeping accommodation at sites where necessary.

The group?s sales and publicity stand visits several events during the year, including Crumpsall Carnival, and organisers welcome help with the preparation and staffing as well as donations of items for sale.

Members help to maintain part of the group?s ever-increasing stock of plant and machinery including pumps, dumpers, hoists, wheelbarrows and hand tools.

They welcome all kinds of skills from painting to rebuilding pumps and everything in between.

The group has just bought a vehicle transporter to enable them to move large equipment up and down the country to wherever they are needed but the purchase has now drained scarce funds.

Their most regular source of income is a waste paper collection run on 10 Saturdays during the year in Crumpsall near to the Metrolink station and the group is urging people to continue to support the recycling scheme.
