POLITICAL rivals have found a shared goal in a campaign for road safety on a street where 10-year-old Wade McDonald died in a hit and run incident. Cheetham Labour councillor Afzal Khan and the Qassim Afzal, the Liberal Democrat he defeated in the last local election are calling for road humps in Cardinal Street. Qassim welcomed Cllr Khan's initiative in raising the issue with the chief constable and hoped the residents' petition would add more weight to the request. He said: "Residents asked my advice on what they should do and I recommended a petition which they have asked me to present on their behalf to Manchester City Council. "I'm glad Cllr Afzal Khan has taken the matter up with the chief constable. By approaching this from the top and from a grassroots position we will hopefully get something done." Qassim Afzal is helping residents put forward a petition demanding the traffic calming measures and Afzal Khan has approached the chief constable David Wilmot to help the residents' fight. People living in the area have complained for years about speeding and stolen cars putting people's lives at risk and have requested 'sleeping policeman' to slow cars down. |
