A STRING of violent crimes committed in the last three weeks are being investigated by police in the Cheetham and Crumpsall area. In the last few days Victoria Wine in Crumpsall Lane, the Co-op in Landsdowne Road and the Wineways off-license on Middleton Road have been struck. Last Sunday two men were both robbed by a gang of Asian youths in Cheetham Hill Road just two hours apart. The first attack was at 1am near the junction of Huxley Avenue when a 21-year-old student was beaten and robbed. The gang searched his pockets and stole a mobile phone and ?2 in change. A 29-year-old Crumpsall man was attacked at the junction of Brideoak Street. He was punched to the ground and robbed of his mobile phone. Days earlier on the Wednesday morning post offices in Bowker Vale and Queen's Road were hit within minutes of each other. The first happened at around 9.30am as a security guard made a cash delivery to Bowker Vale Post Office in Middleton Road, Crumpsall. Two masked men carrying a shotgun and sledge hammer followed him in before hitting him over the head with the gun and snatching the cash box. Minutes later at the Queen's Road Post Office in Cheetham, a gunman burst in and snatched ?100 from the till. He was black, 6ft tall, wearing a black baseball cap, black top and jeans and a scarf covering his face. Investigations are continuing into an incident last Bank Holiday Monday when two thieves armed with an axe and a knife burst into Kwik Save on Crescent Road at around 4pm. The two Asian men wearing balaclavas threatened staff before snatching ?1,500 from the store. They escaped in a grey Ford Mondeo later found abandoned in nearby Woodland Street. In recent weeks a bookies and a church club in Moston have been hit and a video shop in Cheetham Hill was targeted twice in two weeks. |
