RIGHTS of way campaigners have raised concerns over the loss of two public footpaths if a planned garden centre is approved on a former tip in Cheetham. The proposed garden centre is planned next to an approved DIY store on the former Queen's Road tip as part of a wider development for retail, commercial, industrial and leisure use. Peak and Northern Footpaths Society is worried that the garden centre on the northern boundary of the landfill site will block access to the footpaths. They are calling for a condition to be imposed banning any obstruction to the footpath if planning permission is granted. If an obstruction is unavoidable, they have requested that no development take place until a diversion order has been confirmed and the diversion is available for public use. Planning officials argue the footpaths across the old tip are located near New Elizabeth Street and the travelling showman's site and the proposal would not affect any public right of way. A decision on the proposal is expected at Manchester city Council's planning committee meeting to be held at the town hall at 2pm on Thursday, June 8. |
