AN INQUIRY is being launched into the way regeneration initiatives are being run in north Manchester and whether or not they are meeting their targets.

A list of potential contributors will be drawn up in consultation with Manchester City Council's Community Regeneration Scrutiny Committee which is to conduct the inquiry.

Witnesses will be called to give their opinion on the success or failure of the five-year-old regenration programme in north Manchester which still has two years to run.

The witness list will include a range of people and organisations associated with regeneration activity in this area as well as in Moss Side and will cover public, private and community interests.

Invitations will be issued to potential contributors to provide written submissions and some will then be invited to present their views at a formal hearing.

A hearing will be held over one day within the north Manchester area and the deadline for submissions of written evidence will be the end of August and the formal hearing will be held on September 21.

A report on the inquiry will be prepared during October and will be published before the end of the year.

Professor Brian Robson of Manchester University will provide independent technical support throughout the inquiry.

Anyone wishing to be included in the inquiry should contact Eamonn Boylan, Manchester's housing director on 234 4811 or Tom Russell, deputy chief executive on 234 3280.
