AN ELECTRICAL goods store at Heaton Park has been fined after a teenage worker fell through a suspended ceiling in a storeroom. DGS Retail Ltd, who trade as Curry's, Dixons and PC World, pleaded guilty at Manchester Magistrates Court to four counts under the Health and Safety at Work Act. The case was brought by Manchester's environmental health department following the accident involving a 16-year-old boy employed as a weekend casual worker at the Heaton Park Curry's store. The boy stepped off a timber boarded walkway and fell nine feet onto a concrete floor below. He suffered arm and leg injuries and was on crutches for six months. Inspectors found there were no barriers to prevent staff stepping off the timber walkway. It was later revealed another worker had fallen through the ceiling two years earlier but the accident had not been reported as required by law. A site visit discovered a second area that required safety rails to prevent workers falling through the suspended ceiling. Four months later the necessary barriers had still not been put in place. The company was fined ?23,000 and ordered to pay ?2,689 costs. |
