A FACTORY where a man died after being caught in machinery has won a national safety award. The award for workplace safety standards has been announced within days of a worker's death at the Belden factory at the former BICC Cables site on Delauney's Road, Crumpsall. Colleagues stopped work on Thursday and flags flew at half mast as a sign of respect for the 56-year-old man who was dead on arrival at hospital after the accident in the early hours of Wednesday, May 17. An investigation has been launched into the cause of the accident and factory bosses have been instructed to temporarily cease carrying out certain procedures until safety checks have been carried out. Firefighters fought to release the man from cable winding equipment after he became caught up at 2.30am. Paramedics struggled to stabilise him with oxygen and adrenalin. An ambulance raced the few hundred yards from the plant to North Manchester General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. |
