A FORMER mosque is to be turned into a DIY store despite objections from neighbours who complain the development will cause a nuisance. The two-storey Victorian building next to the Belgravia Hotel on Cheetham Hill Road is in a mainly residential area. It has been out of use since the mosque relocated and has fallen into disrepair. Developers plan to open a DIY shop on the ground floor. The upper floor will be retained as living quarters and there will be parking for four cars on the Cheetham Hill forecourt. Residents in neighbouring properties objected that the retail use would add to noise and parking problems in the area and argue there are many empty shops in the district centre more suited to such use. Planning officials were satisfied that the building was suited to retail use and that the development would bring back into use a dilapidated building. They agreed the new use would increase traffic but did not believe this would have a significantly adverse affect on road safety or disturb nearby residents. The shop will be allowed to open from 9am to 8pm. |
